The questions people ask at this exact point. Everything else is in the help center.
Do I need a credit card to start?
No. The trial runs for 14 days with no card required. You only enter payment details if you decide to subscribe afterwards.
Will I be charged when the trial ends?
No. Nothing is charged at the end of the trial, and there is nothing to cancel. We never took your card details, so no payment can be taken automatically. If you want to carry on after the 14 days, you subscribe yourself — it is an active choice, not something that happens by default.
Is the trial the full course, or a sample?
The full course for the level you choose. Every lesson, video, dialogue, drill and practice quiz is open for the whole 14 days — nothing is locked, shortened or reserved for paying subscribers. You are trying the product itself, not a preview of it.
Which level should I try?
Pick the level you are preparing for. If you have never studied Japanese, start at N5 — it begins with hiragana and katakana and assumes no previous experience. If you are not sure where you fit, the level descriptions on the courses page are the quickest way to place yourself.
What does it cost if I continue?
One JLPT level costs $180 for a year of access, or $69 for three months if you want a shorter commitment. Both give you the complete course for that level, with nothing held back behind extra purchases.
I already study at Coto — is this the same thing?
They solve different problems. Coto classes build the ability to speak and understand Japanese with a teacher in real time. J-Standard covers the exam material systematically, on your own schedule. Many students use both — classes during the week, J-Standard for exam preparation in the run-up to July and December.
