Never Studied Japanese? Start One Step earlier
Before the N5 course begins, there is a section for the writing system and the everyday basics — the part where most self-taught beginners get stuck and quietly give up.
- Hiragana and Katakana, character by character
- Numbers, dates, times and counters
- Your first sentences, before any exam vocabulary
- No prior knowledge assumed anywhere
Building the foundation
13 units, starting from the writing system itself — hiragana, katakana, and the everyday basics.
What you’ll be able to do
- Read and write hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji
- Introduce yourself and exchange everyday greetings
- Follow short, slow conversations about familiar topics
Everyday conversation
12 units of structure — enough to hold a real conversation and handle daily situations on your own.
What you’ll be able to do
- Hold everyday conversations spoken at a slower pace
- Read simple texts written in basic vocabulary and kanji
- Handle daily situations like shopping, transport, and appointments
The conversational turn
18 units covering the turn where Japanese stops being a subject and starts being usable — often the minimum for part-time work in Japan.
What you’ll be able to do
- Follow everyday conversations at near-natural speed
- Read newspaper headlines and texts on familiar topics
- Express opinions and explain your reasoning in daily situations
The one employers ask for
24 units up to the benchmark asked for by most employers in Japan, by the Permanent Residence points system, and increasingly for work visas in certain industries.
What you’ll be able to do
- Express doubts and concerns at work with nuance, not just simple statements
- Ask a senior colleague for advice and follow the answer
- Follow conversations that shift between polite and casual speech
